Cake Wrecks
I seriously am sitting here crying from laughing so hard. This is the best blog ever--make sure you read Jen's commentary. She's ridiculously funny.
Cake Wrecks
I wonder if she'd post my "Sorry About Your Herpes" cake I bought for Jess, Stace & Todd. Hmm...

"Hi. My name is Carly..."
"...and I'm a mess."
I'm going to start a new branch of the 12-step program. MA...Mess Anon. I think I need recovery. I need recovery because people don't want to handle a messy person. Get right, or get out.
Which just smacks of irony because everyone is a mess in their own right.
I like a good mess. I mean, not the kind that would necessitate an outside cleaning crew--but a decent, real, 'yeah, me too' kind of mess. I hate my own imperfections but I happen to find some weird sort of solace in other people's. I think our mess makes us. I'm insecure about my body...and you don't like eggs. I have an irrational hatred of Jodie Foster and you have an irrational fear of committment. I get it. It's the perfect that doesn't make sense to me. I want you to show me something.

Birthday boy
Oh, and here's a few pics of my Dad today. I love him a lot. And that's the understatement of the century.
Christian got really excited and Dad kept trying to trick him into telling him what we got him.
So stinkin' cute.
Burger Queen?
Today is Dad's birthday and Mum always makes him a poppyseed cake--and the kids, okay, including me, just don't want any part of that. So I went searching for something fun to make and decided on these:

I took some pics of the process, because they were pretty fun to make.

Yessss.

It's getting closer...
Steeler Training Camp!!!
This year, I'm living in Latrobe and therefore, I'm seriously only a whole 3 minutes away from Camp.
Evening practices, here I come!
I might end up an NFL wife, yet (come on-I'd be a perfect one, you know it)!
Oh, and I was reading over stuff and came across this gem:
Restrictions: There is no videotaping of practice permitted.
Says Bill Beliache, er, I mean Belichick: "What about games? Can we videotape THOSE?"

Mean-spirited baked goods.
So B and I had a great idea last night. Ready?...
The Voo Doo Cupcake!
You put a candle in it, and make a wish...at someone else's expense.
Sidenote: Incidentally, I've decided to make all my wishes mean ones from now on. That way, everyone has to be nice to me for fear I'll wish plague & pestilence on them.
B says I could retire early if I market them. Here's my artist's rendition of said cupcake:

I've made it black & blue. Kind of like my bruised and battered soul.

I'm changing it back.
What's that thing about you should always stick with your first reaction/instinct?
The Knave of Hearts it is.

Brothers
I forgot to post these pictures from the 4th of July. They're glorious.
The following series chronicles the interaction between my two youngest nephews, affectionately known as Big-Little (Christian) and Little-Little (Carter). None of it was staged.
Carter is the one who thinks he's Batman.

Dear John Steinbeck...
You were a brilliant, brilliant man. I love you.
Carly
Here are some favorites from To A God Unknown (so far)...
On top of the ridge stood a clump of giant madrone trees, and Joseph saw with wonder how nearly they resembled meat and muscles. They thrust up the muscular limbs as red as flayed flesh and twisted like bodies on the rack. Joseph laid his hand on one of the branches as he rode by, and it was cold and sleek and hard. But the leaves at the ends of the horrible limbs were bright green and shiny. Pitiless and terrible trees, the madrones. They cried with pain when they burned.
The frame of the house was standing, waiting for its skin...
...the whole cup of the sky, the land, eddied with black trees, and the crested waves that were the mountains, and earth storm, frozen in the peaks of its rushing, or stone breakers moving eastward with infinite slowness. Joseph wondered if there were any words to say these things. He said, "I like the night. It's more strong than the day."
He cried in his mind, "Can you hear me? I am cold with a thing to say, and prayerful for a way to say it." His eyes widened and he was entranced. "I have thought without words."
She said silently, "I must pray a little. Lord Jesus, make things easy for me because I am afraid. In all the time I've had to learn about myself, I have learned nothing. Be kind to me, Lord Jesus, at least until I learn what kind of thing I am."
Joseph nearly forgot his mission, for hte hills reached out tender arms to him and the mountains were as gentle and insistent as a loving woman who is half asleep.

Cakey goodness.
I changed my cake blog, so here's a new link: cakewalk
Here's the thing--Jess was upset that I changed the name from Knave of Hearts. She thought it was brilliant and different. And honestly, I loved it, but I felt like I had to keep explaining it. So, it sparked a conversation about having to dumb everything down so people will 'get it.' She thinks I should change it back.
Anyone have an opinion? Actually, have an opinion. I'd like some help making a decision. What say you?

Room Service
We did it. Wow...was that a BLAST. You have no idea.
Here's the before picture I took on Thursday night.

And here is the after.

Do you want more?
Of course you do.

The chairs before I recovered them. (There were eight of those monsters and I have the blisters from the staple gun to prove it. Not to mention, today, at one point my right hand went a little numb on me.)

The chairs after.

The limes we added at the very end might be my favorite. It's amazing the difference just a little touch of the right color will make.

Our work in progress.

Scott helped (and true to form hammed it up when he saw a camera).

And Danny provided the soundtrack.

As I type this Dave, Erin and the girls are on their way home from Lancaster. They won't be in until after midnight. I told Erin I'm glad we won't be there in case she doesn't like it--she won't have to feign excitement. But I'm also a little in love with it, so I don't know how she could hate it. I'm so excited and so nervous!

While You Were Out
SO. Last October or so, my friend Erin (aka Tink) asked B and I if we would decorate her dining room. She had tried different things, different paint, but wasn't happy with it. Basically, I remember her being like, "I'm fed up. I really like your taste/style and I just want you two to do it."
We said sure. So, last week, she showed us a couple things she liked, and then her dad came in and painted the room for us.
They left today for vacation and B and I are moving in for the weekend. We've got their credit card and a budget. And lots of time to transform her room into something (hopefully) she'll fall in love with when she comes home.
I'd be lying if I didn't admit how RIDICULOUSLY excited I am.

Quis ut Deus?
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host-
by the Divine Power of God-
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
My friend Robert sent me that prayer. And then he told me this:
I really like St. Michael because he's the archangel who lead the attack on satan and the rebel angels with the cry, "Quis ut Deus?" or "Who is like God?"
Bad ass. That's what that is.
To A God Unknown
I just started reading this book last night.
I love Steinbeck. So much. So, so much.
He bowed his white head, "May the blessing of God and my blessing rest on this child. May he live in the light of the Face. May he love his life." He paused for a moment. "Now, Joseph, you may go to the West. You are finished here with me."
The winter came soon, with deep snow, and the air was frozen to needles. For a month Joseph wandered about the house, reluctant to leave his youth and all the strong material memories of his youth, but the blessing had cut him off. He was a stranger in the house and he felt that his brothers would be glad when he was gone. He went away before the spring had come and the grass was green on the hills in California when he arrived.
Yeah. Like that.

Fantastic Voyage(r)...
That's right, people--today was my miniChristmas. Otherwise known as 'new every two' day with Verizon. And I went a little crazy. But I got my dream PHONE.
So you should text me. I need to practice with my new keyboard. And touch screen.
Oh, and I already set my wallpaper to this:

Case in point...
Okay, see this is what I'm talking about. I just had a customer on the phone. She's a dear woman and is always nice to me.
But after every ISBN, when she tells me how many of any given item she says, "Five cooooopies."
And it's HORRIBLE. I mean...Janice from Friends horrible. She seriously drags it out unnecessarily and it annoys me more than I feel comfortable talking about. So, I'm sitting here, covering my mouth with my hand, willing her to just STOP IT.
Look, I don't want to dislike this woman. I decide to be proactive. So, after she gives me the ISBN, I say, "How many?" thinking that she'll just answer with a simple number, like "5," right? Wrong.
"Okay--ISBN 9780883689999."
"How To Alienate and Hurt Non-Christians Because You're Better Than Them? How many?"
"Two coooooooooooopies."
Ugh. Okay, this isn't working. I try again.
"ISBN 9780883689997."
"Jesus, Protect Me From Your Followers? How many copies?" (See what I did there?...)
"Three coooooooooooopies."
I give up. I quit.
And it makes me like her less.

No lid.
I have no lid upon my head
But if I did
You could look inside and see
Whats on my mind...
This probably isn't the best idea for me. I'm realizing that I'm a fairly hateful human being...unless I like you. The bottom line is that I'm just really, really glad that people can't see what's on my mind. Because more often than not, I'm probably judging how you dress...or how you dress your children. Or thinking how I'd think you were more attractive if you were taller. Or wondering how you made it to the age you're at with being so absolutely stupid. Or how I have no idea what a guy like you is doing with a girl like that. Or thinking that I'd love to have a body like yours...but only from the waist up.
I recently told Jess that it's probably a really good thing that I don't have my own reality show. It's a good thing because of the simple fact that while I spend most of my time being hateful inside my head, occasionally...I let it slip out. What's important to note is that I only let it slip out if I'm by myself (or with someone equally as mean, which...well, is Jess and that's about it) and that's why a reality show would be disasterous--because I'd never be by myself. When I'm yelling at the short guy on a motorcycle in front of me, and calling him a troll--there'd be a camera. When I'm mocking the old lady in the Wendy's drive thru because she's taking forEVER--yeah, there'd be a camera. When I walk back to my desk muttering that I hate it when you talk to me and I don't want you to talk to me and I'm about done being polite to your face--hey look, a camera!
I think I'm what's wrong with the world.

Can I get a Witness?
I go into work at 11am on Tuesdays & Thursdays and work until 7pm. On my late days, I always see these two Jehovah's Witnesses (probably in their 20s) walking along the street in their white short-sleeved dress shirts and black skinny ties headed door-to-door to witness to the lost, or whatever it is they do.
A few weeks ago, I was at a stop sign when they walked right by my car. The one looked at me and smiled. I'm a cute girl. He wants to save my soul. I get it. Whatever.
The next week, I was driving by (it's like a 25 mph zone with a bunch of stop signs) and no joke, he gave me the 'playa head nod.' I laughed out loud in my car. A JW just gave me a "What's up." Fabulous.
Well, that was about 2 weeks ago. This morning, I had my jams playing, my coffee, my sunglasses (because next to shoes, I love sunglasses next) and I was on my way out of town when there they were. And this morning, he waved. He WAVED. I've been singled out, people. He didn't wave to any other cars.
Which (stay with me), begs the following question: what does he think is going to happen? That I'm going to mistake him for a Geek Squad employee, pull over to ask a question about my hard drive and he'll get to offer me a chance to become one of The Chosen?
I must look like a mighty fine sinner, yessiree.
