i was driving to work this morning and a commercial came on for vermont teddy bear company. they went on and on about how a girlfriend/wife would be SO THRILLED to get one of these bears.
and i thought..."really?" i mean, REALLY? then out loud in my car i asked myself, "do grown women like getting teddy bears? fifteen-year-old girls like getting teddy bears, but grown women?"
that's when i started to worry a little. because i'm guessing the answer is, yes-they do. if it wasn't, this teddy bear company wouldn't be so successful, right? then i wondered if they're successful because women like getting teddy bears or because men think women like getting teddy bears.
(i'm telling you--my mind is a terrifying place to be. it's like that all the time.)
i worried because it made me wonder if something is intrinsically wrong with me. because i think teddy bears are gay. and it's not just teddy bears--it's this goofy idea of romance that's associated with things like them. those kind "romantic" gestures make me kind of gaggy and super uncomfortable.
a bottle of wine and a copy of rushmore will get the job done.
disclaimer: i mean no disrespect to girls who like teddy bears. although, if you do, you're probably the kind of girl who wears/would wear one of those pink football jerseys. and, honestly, i judge you for that. a little. but we can still be friends. maybe.

When you get that box from Mike in the mail, don't open it. It's a teddy bear.
oops?
i've already put a 'stop shipment' on it...
and so much for the pink 7 jersey you were going to be getting.
mike. it's okay. just be honest...it was a bear wearing a pink #7 jersey, wasn't it?
Hmm, yeah, teddy bears? Only if I could rip it open and find some diamonds inside. Or an authentic signed black & gold jersey ;) lol
i lovelovelove you!
this is why we're friends. <3
so, aparently mike got us the same thing. mine came today.
sara, yours was a jets #28 jersey, right? east rutherford representing.
ben wears a pink jersey. it's got tom brady's number on it.
but seriously, i was reading a piece of writing today and the person was talking about getting one of those build your own bears for their birthday and really liked it and i thought, "you're an adult that got a teddy bear for your birthday. all right."
oh man. mike...come on-you can't do that. did you think sara and i weren't going to talk? sheesh.
and ed--hmm. see, i completely wondered about that side of it. like, did it bother me because it's a toy? but i don't think that's it. cause if a guy got me, say, more play-doh for valentine's day, i'd be ecstatic. so. i think i'm just a teddy bear bigot?
I liked this post. It was totally honest. I will back you up. I, as a grown woman, do not like receiving stuffed animals, teddy bear or any other species. They take up space that I don't want to spare - and they aren't commemorative of anything - they are a childish statement of a childish sentiment. As a sassy, sophisticated woman, I expect a gift that reflects acknowledgment and celebration of these character traits.
yesss!
i'm curious as to what a guy would think if he went to a girl's apartment/house and there were stuffed animals everywhere.
cause if i was a guy, i'd be creeped out.
oh my goodness...everytime i hear those commercials i honestly think the same thing. i truly think if anyone would ever even think to get me one of these i would truly hip check etiquette and give them the whole "thanks, but..." thing. what an effing waste of money.
